History

People & Power was launched on November 15, 2006 on the new Al Jazeera English channel.

It was originally presented by reporter Shereen El Feki but she was replaced by a new presenter, Samah El-Shahat, a development economist, in March 2007.

Juliana Ruhfus is the programme’s main reporter and occasional presenter. Her film on the ex-combattants in Liberia launched the strand the day Al Jazeera went on air.

She is formerly an independent current affairs and documentary reporter and producer for international broadcasters such as Channel 4 (UK), BBC, ARD (Germany) and NHK (Japan).

Other regular reporters include Zeina Awad, Bob Abeshouse, Max Keiser, Sapna Bhatia, Paul Martin and Mohamed Maklouf.

The show has introduced several regular slots. A series called ‘If I had the Power’ asked people in the street what they would do if they had the power of President of the United States George W. Bush for the day. Five minute long ‘Power of One’ films look at how one person has changed the lives of a community through their own actions. People featured to date are ‘Rob the Rubbish’, Cambridge scientist Helen Lee, and Trevor Bayliss, inventor of the clockwork radio.

In June 2007 People & Power launched its first special season – presented from Doha, Qatar.

Since Al Jazeera's launch on YouTube in spring 2007 the programme's availability has increased.
